Alecos Markides was born in Nicosia in 1943. He graduated with first-class honours from the Law School of the University of Athens in 1966 and was called to the Bar at the Middle Temple Inn, England, in 1970.
He practiced law in Cyprus from September 1971 until February 1995, when he was appointed Attorney General of Cyprus. He held this position until April 23, 2003, after which he resumed private practice and established his own law office in collaboration with Markides, Markides & Co, becoming a partner in 2007.
From 1979 to 1993, Alecos served as Secretary General of the Democratic Rally political party, and from 1993 to 1995, he was the party’s Deputy President. He was elected twice as a member of the House of Representatives between 1985 and 1995 and was a candidate for President of Cyprus in 2003.
Between 1985 and 1990, Alecos co-edited the Cyprus Law Reports. From 2001, he lectured and examined on constitutional law and, until 2012, on civil procedure law for the legal council of pupil advocates. He also served as a visiting professor of constitutional law at the University of Nicosia and was one of the four Cypriot members of the Permanent Court of Arbitration, where he acted as an arbitrator, co-arbitrator, or umpire.
Alecos Markides passed away in 2020, having served his country and the law profession with the greatest distinction.
Hermione Markides graduated with first-class honours from the Law School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
She practiced law in Cyprus for over 50 years. During her distinguished career, she served as Secretary General of the Cyprus Bar Council for six years, President of the Society for Scientific and Cultural Studies, and President of the Council of Legal Education, preparing pupil advocates for the Cyprus Bar in collaboration with Leicester University for 15 years.
Hermione was also a lecturer on Cyprus law and authored several legal articles on intellectual property (IP) law and company law. She specialized in IP law, leading the Firm’s IP department for over 30 years and significantly contributing to its reputation as one of Cyprus’s leading practices in this field.
Her involvement extended beyond national borders as she was a member of the Internet Committee of ECTA, the Unfair Competition Committee of MARQUES, and served on the Board and Council of EPI.
